Valentine’s Day is a day that celebrates love. The love between you and your partner. If you’re in a relationship, you may be overwhelmed with trying to reach unrealistic standards of planning the perfect date or gift.

If you are single, you may experience feelings of loneliness during this time; but don’t worry, you are not alone and these emotions are completely normal.

Whether you are single or in a relationship, here are some tips to protect your mental health this Valentine’s Day!

Ignore Unrealistic Expectations

Society puts pressure on this day to be absolutely perfect. You are pressured to organize the perfect date or buy the perfect gift, but that simply isn’t true.

This day seems to bring out the worst in being single. There is no shame. It is just one day; enjoy the delicious chocolates and try not to get caught up in what society thinks this day should be all about.

Celebrate You!

If you are single, this is your day to shine. Instead of showering your partner with gifts, why not shower yourself with some? Take a bath, do some online shopping, or just relax in bed. Whatever you do, focus on yourself and what will make you happy that day.

Friends and Family Need Some Loving Too

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be filled with romance. Celebrate a bromance or enjoy the day with your best friend. This is a perfect day to appreciate everyone around you.

Take a Social Media Break

Today is a great day to put down your phone and enjoy what’s good around you. Your mental health will thank you. It is nice to see what your friends are up to, but today is a good time to step back and not compare ourselves to our friends on social media.

Whether you are celebrating Valentine’s Day with your partner, friends, family, or yourself, remember it is just a day. Try to enjoy it as much as you can.
