Reducing Stress at your Desk: Zen Office Workspace

Creating a zen office workspace can help promote productivity, reduce stress, and create a harmonious working environment. Zen is a philosophy and practice that places great importance on mindfulness, presence, and direct experience. It gives direction for individuals who desire a profound understanding of themselves and the world around them. In many Asian cultures, Zen influences from simplicity, minimalism, and mindfulness are everywhere in art, architecture and nature.  Here are some tips for creating a zen office space that can cater to all types of working environments:

Declutter and Organize

Try to keep the necessary current projects at your desk. Take 5 minutes out of your day to tidy your workspace. Put on your noise-cancelling headphones, and listen to music or a podcast.  For ambitious people, the best way to declutter is to clear the whole desk, wiping the surface and introduce items back to the table. Consider also organizing your computer desktop or even the files and cabinets around you. Any of these self-care cleaning tips will make the area get clutter-free, promoting a clearer mind and reducing distractions.

Bring Natural Elements

Incorporating anything from nature will be grounding to the area.  It can be a rock, a picked flower, fake succulents, a moss plant, a picture of a landscape or even a desktop image of nature.  Even listening to calming nature sounds can create a calmer atmosphere.  If you can see the outdoors from your desk, take a moment and notice a few things outside.

Nice Lighting

Harsh fluorescent lighting can bring stress to the eyes. Consider soft or natural lighting whenever possible. This will also be beneficial when joining a video call. Good lighting can make you look professional at the meeting.

Be Ergonomic

Comfortable and supportive furniture is crucial for maintaining good posture and reducing physical stress. Check with your company if there are corporate expense funds to invest in an ergonomic chair with an adjustable desk that allows you to switch between sitting and standing positions.  Another option is adjustable cushion computer chair. Monitor stands are also ideal for adjusting the computer screen at eye level to avoid straining your neck. Footstools or foot pillows are great stress relievers for the lower back and legs.

Surrounding Yourself in Calm Colours

Choosing light, neutral tones such as whites, grays, or pastels can create a calming and focused environment.  These tones also look great in video chat. Try to notice what is behind you and see how you can incorporate these calm colours.

Sensory-Friendly

Noise can be a distraction in the workplace. Create designated quiet areas that can be doubled as prayer areas. Consider wearing noise-cancelling headphones, which can be wireless and comes with different sound settings. Foam cushions, floor mats, foot rollers, and wrist pillows are great for people who require extra resistance and grounding. Fidget toys and stress relief balls are great additions to make your area comfortable.

Personalization

Encourage employees to bring in items that hold personal meaning, such as family photos, plants, or small memento, to make their space feel more comfortable and reflective of their personality. Decorate your workspace with items that inspire and uplift you.

Promote Wellness & Mindfulness:

Encourage employees to prioritize their well-being and offer resources that support their physical and mental health.  This can include yoga or meditation sessions, mindfulness workshops, or access to fitness equipment.  During breaks at the desk, turn off the computer screen or switch to screen save mode with peaceful images.  Encourage employees to take regular breaks and engage in stress-relieving activities such as meditation or stretching.

Remember, creating a zen office workspace is an ongoing process. Continuously adjust the environment based on your needs and any feedback from your colleagues. Creating a serene and well-balanced workspace has numerous benefits, including increased productivity, enhanced creativity, and improved overall well-being. When you prioritize establishing a calm and balanced environment, you provide yourself with the ideal conditions for optimal work performance.
