Our special guests, Caurel Richards, Hypnotherapist, Joelle Isaac-Crepault, Social Worker and Argentina Simões, Psychotherapist, brought their unique perspectives as specialists to the table, providing valuable insights into finding and adhering to our core values.
Staying true to your path is all about authenticity. As Caurel Richards, a hypnotherapist and transformation counsellor, highlighted, it’s about aligning with what feels true to you, even when life throws its inevitable challenges. This alignment often starts with identifying your core values.
Values are the guiding principles that shape our decisions and actions. They are deeply personal and can vary greatly from one individual to another. Here are some tips and examples to help you identify your values:
- Reflect on Significant Life Experiences:
– Think about moments when you felt most fulfilled or proud. What values were you honouring in those moments?
– Consider times of conflict or discomfort. What values were being challenged? - Assess Your Strengths and Weaknesses:
– Joelle Isaac-Crepault, a social worker, emphasized the importance of recognizing both strengths and weaknesses. This awareness helps in understanding what values you naturally lean towards and which ones you need to work on.
- Seek External Perspectives:
– Argentina Simões suggested, that engaging in therapy or deep conversations with trusted individuals can offer new perspectives and help you identify values you might not be fully aware of.
- Use Structured Tools:
– There are various assessments available, such as the VIA Character Strengths Survey, which can help you pinpoint your core values.
Examples of Value Words
To get you started, here are some common value words that you might resonate with:
- Integrity: Being honest and having strong moral principles.
- Freedom: Valuing the ability to make your own choices.
- Family: Prioritizing close relationships with family members.
- Creativity: Emphasizing originality and innovation in your actions.
- Courage: Facing fears and taking bold actions.
- Compassion: Showing kindness and empathy towards others.
- Growth: Continually developing and improving oneself.
- Respect: Valuing others and treating them with dignity.
Values are not static; they can evolve. Caurel Richards pointed out that while some values might remain fundamental, others can shift based on life stages and experiences. For instance, the values you prioritize in your professional life might differ from those in your personal life.
Navigating life with a clear understanding of your values is like having a reliable roadmap. It helps you make decisions that are true to who you are. However, it’s also essential to remain flexible and open to change. Life is a journey with many twists and turns, and sometimes adapting your values is necessary to continue growing and thriving.
Living a life aligned with your values can lead to greater satisfaction, purpose, and overall well-being. Statistics and research underscore the significant impact that understanding and adhering to one’s values can have on various aspects of life.
The Impact of Values on Life Satisfaction
- Higher Life Satisfaction:
Research consistently shows that individuals who align their lives with their values report higher levels of life satisfaction. A study published in the Journal of Counseling Psychology found that people who have clarity understand their values and live by them experience a better sense of fulfillment and happiness.
- Improved Mental Health:
Values alignment is also linked to better mental health outcomes. The Journal of Counseling Psychology also reported that individuals who align their actions with their core values experience lower levels of anxiety and depression. This correlation suggests that knowing and living by your values can be a protective factor against mental health issues.
The Benefits of Values in the Workplace
- Increased Job Satisfaction:
A survey by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) found that employees who feel their job aligns with their values are more satisfied with their work. They are also more engaged and committed to their organization, which leads to higher productivity and lower turnover rates.
- Better Decision-Making:
Individuals who understand their values are better equipped to make decisions and are consistent with their long-term goals. This alignment reduces stress and indecision, as people can use their values as a guidepost for making tough choices.
Personal Growth and Relationships
- Enhanced Personal Growth:
Individuals who actively engage in activities, that reflect their values experience more personal growth. This engagement leads to a greater sense of purpose and continuous self-improvement.
- Stronger Relationships:
Values alignment also positively affects relationships. Research by the American Psychological Association indicates that couples who share and respect each other’s values report higher relationship satisfaction and stability.
Once you find some values, here are some tips to help you navigate and explore your values.
- Have a moment of self-reflection. Spend time reflecting on what truly matters to you. Consider moments in your life when you felt most proud or fulfilled and identify the values present in those experiences.
- Consider writing your moments in a journal. Journaling explores and records your thoughts on what you value and why. This practice can help you stay connected to your values and recognize when you might be straying from them.
- Seek constructive feedback. Engage in conversations with trusted friends, family, mentors, or specialists to gain insights into your values. Others can often see patterns and strengths that you might overlook.
- Experiment and Reflect. Try new activities or challenges that resonate with your perceived values. Reflect on these experiences to determine if they truly align with your core beliefs and bring satisfaction.
Discovering and living by your values is a powerful way to navigate life’s challenges and pursue a path that brings genuine fulfillment and well-being. Whether in a personal life or a professional setting, values alignment leads to better mental health, stronger relationships, and increased life satisfaction.
Staying true to your path requires a deep understanding of your values and the courage to live by them. Listen to the full Episode 20 to gain more insights and inspiration on embracing your authentic journey.
