What is Black History Month?

There are many ways to celebrate and recognize Black History Month:

This can include learning about well-known figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and Rosa Parks, as well as lesser-known figures who have made significant contributions to their communities and to society at large.
  2. Support Black-Owned Businesses: Shop at black-owned businesses, attend events and shows hosted by black artists and performers and seek out black-owned restaurants and cafes. If you are in the GTA head over to Black Owned Toronto to shop for black-owned businesses and products, you can find everything from beauty and skin care, to food products, home goods, and much more.  
  3. Get Involved in Your Community: Volunteer with organizations that support African American communities, attend events and programs hosted by local cultural institutions and participate in community-wide celebrations of Black History Month. 
  4. Engage in Conversations about Race and Racism: Use Black History Month as an opportunity to have meaningful and productive conversations about race and racism, and to learn about the ways in which these issues continue to impact African Americans today.
  5. Celebrate Black Culture: Attend events and activities that celebrate the music, art, literature, and food of African American culture, and learn more about the traditions and customs that make this culture so rich and diverse.
